Federal prosecutors: Murder case against Decarlos Brown Jr. to proceed despite competency ruling

Federal prosecutors say the criminal case against Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., accused of killing Iryna Zarutska, will continue even though a court-ordered evaluation found him currently not competent to stand trial.

According to officials, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons concluded that Brown’s condition may improve with treatment, meaning he could potentially be restored to competency in the future. As a result, the prosecution will not be dropped, but legal proceedings are expected to be paused while he undergoes psychiatric evaluation and care aimed at determining whether he can eventually face trial.
