Ohio brothers who posed as Middle Eastern royalty sentenced to up to 24 years in $21M fraud scheme

Two Ohio brothers who built a fake identity as wealthy Middle Eastern royalty have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after a federal court found they ran a $21 million fraud operation involving bribery, luxury spending, and international scams.
Zubair and Muzzammil Al Zubair were sentenced to 24 and 23 years in prison, respectively, after prosecutors said they used fabricated claims of royal ties, fake investment ventures, and elite connections to deceive victims in the U.S. and abroad.
Authorities said the brothers carried out multiple schemes from 2020 to 2023, including tricking investors with a fake cryptocurrency business and defrauding individuals of millions by posing as ultra-wealthy figures. One victim alone reportedly lost nearly $18 million.
Prosecutors also revealed they bribed a former East Cleveland mayoral aide to gain official support, using cash, luxury gifts, and perks in exchange for access to city influence and documents.
Their extravagant lifestyle included private jets, Rolls-Royces, luxury watches, and even a gold-plated firearm, which helped reinforce their false image of extreme wealth.
A third defendant involved in the scheme received an eight-year prison sentence for assisting the fraud network.
