California Wildfire: The Madre Fire Engulfs 53,000 Acres Near Central Coast

A massive wildfire known as the Madre Fire has erupted near California’s Central Coast, rapidly growing to 53,000 acres by Wednesday afternoon, making it the largest wildfire of 2025. The blaze, which ignited after 1 p.m. along Highway 166 in New Cuyama, has now surpassed the combined size of January’s Palisades & Eaton fires.

Evacuation Orders & Warnings:

  • Evacuation orders are in effect for portions of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
  • temporary evacuation point has been set up at 13080 Soda Lake Road, Santa Margarita for those affected.
  • Evacuation orders: LPF-017, SLC-226, SLC-264, SLC-265, SLC-299, SLC-312, SLC-337, SLC-338.
  • Evacuation warnings: SLC-263, SLC-298, SLC-300, SLC-313, SLC-339, SLC-358, plus areas east of Rock Front, west of Cottonwood Canyon Road, and south of Highway 166.

Firefighting Efforts:

Over 300 firefighters, supported by 7 air tankers and 2 helicopters, are on the frontlines battling the fast-spreading flames. The fire is spreading rapidly across the Carrizo Plain, visible on UC San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia cameras.

As of now, the fire is only 5% contained, and 50 structures remain threatened.
