Six Seniors Injured in Tempe Community Center Attack; Suspect Arrested

Tempe community center attack as police respond to Escalante Multi-Generational Center

Tempe community center attack left six seniors injured Wednesday afternoon at the Escalante Multi-Generational Center, according to Tempe police.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near University Drive and Loop 101. At least one victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Police identified the suspect as Derek Kirven, 62, who was arrested after being told for a second time that he was not a member of the center. According to police, the suspect attacked multiple people after being confronted. On-site security detained him until officers arrived.

Police have not released a motive or details on the extent of the victims’ injuries. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
