Poland says Russian missile crashed deep inside its territory during Ukraine attack
WARSAW — A Russian missile crashed deep inside Polish territory during a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine, prompting an investigation by Polish authorities and renewed concerns over NATO airspace security.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said all indications suggest the object was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile that landed in Lublin Province, creating a large crater in a remote field after traveling well inside Poland. No casualties were reported.
The Polish military said its air defense systems tracked multiple missiles over western Ukraine that had the potential to enter Polish airspace. Fighter jets were placed on alert, and authorities said they were prepared to intercept the missile if it posed a threat to populated areas.
The incident occurred during a wave of Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine that killed at least eight people and injured dozens more, according to Ukrainian authorities. Investigators are examining the crash site, while Poland has stressed there is no indication it was the intended target of the missile.
