Video: Medjugorje Virgin Mary statue vandalized, suspect arrested after fire at Catholic shrine

MEDJUGORJE, Bosnia and Herzegovina — A man has been arrested after allegedly vandalizing the Virgin Mary statue at the renowned Catholic pilgrimage site of Medjugorje, police said.

Authorities said the suspect covered the statue with black paint before setting fire to a nearby altar. Emergency responders extinguished the blaze, and the shrine remains open to pilgrims.

Police have not released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive, and an investigation is ongoing.

Following the incident, church leaders called on the faithful to respond with prayer, forgiveness, and peace, while reaffirming that Medjugorje continues to welcome visitors despite the attack.
