At Least 9 Critically Injured in Downtown Tucson Shooting; Suspect Shot by Police

At least nine people were critically injured in an overnight shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, while an alleged gunman was shot by police, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. near Empire Pizza, in the area of Congress Street and Sixth Avenue, according to the Tucson Police Department. Officers conducting a foot patrol heard gunfire and ran toward the scene.

Police said officers encountered an armed suspect and opened fire, critically wounding him. The suspect was transported to a hospital in life-threatening condition.

Officers found nine additional shooting victims at the scene and immediately began providing emergency aid. The victims were taken to hospitals across the area and were reported to be in critical condition.

The Ronstadt Transit Center was closed as police secured the area and began investigating. Authorities had not immediately released the identities of the suspect or victims, and the circumstances leading to the shooting remained under investigation.

Officials have not announced whether any police officers were injured.
