Knife-Wielding Man Shot by NYPD on Lower East Side; Multiple People Injured

NEW YORK — An NYPD officer shot and critically injured a man who allegedly charged at police with a knife at 126 Ludlow Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Sunday, August 16. Another person and four officers also required medical treatment.
Police responded shortly after 4 p.m. following a 911 call reporting an armed person. Initial reports indicated that the call involved a domestic dispute.
When officers arrived, the man allegedly charged toward an officer while holding a large knife, prompting one officer to open fire.
Man Hospitalized in Critical Condition
The man was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, according to initial local reporting.
A second person was also hospitalized. Officials did not immediately disclose that person’s condition or explain how the injuries occurred.
Four NYPD officers were treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for minor injuries. No officer was reported shot.
Police recovered a knife from the scene. Authorities have not identified the injured man, and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
