Amy Halvorsen Breaks Down as Australia’s Nursing Crisis Deepens

Amy Halvorsen, the former Westmead Hospital nurse who publicly resigned during the Covid-19 pandemic, broke down in tears while accusing Australian leaders of failing exhausted healthcare workers.

Halvorsen said hospital conditions have worsened, experienced nurses are leaving and intensive care units remain overwhelmed despite repeated government promises.

Australia could face a shortage of 70,000 nurses by 2035. Nurses are demanding equal pay nationwide, safer staffing ratios, free hospital parking and better mental-health support.

Halvorsen said she still loves nursing but has seen no systemic improvements that would persuade her to return to the profession.
