Hurricane Melissa to Strengthen Into Category 5 Storm, Jamaica Braces for Catastrophic Impact

Hurricane Melissa Intensifying Rapidly in the Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa continues to strengthen and could reach Category 5 intensity tonight, according to the latest forecast. The powerful storm is packing extremely dangerous winds, torrential rain, and life-threatening storm surge, putting Jamaica, southeastern Cuba, and the Bahamas on high alert.

Meteorologists report that Hurricane Melissa will likely pass over or near Jamaica as a Category 4 storm by Tuesday, before tracking toward southeastern Cuba and the Bahamas later in the week.

Catastrophic Flooding and Landslides Expected

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of catastrophic flash flooding, deadly landslides, and coastal inundation across Jamaica and nearby islands. Rainfall totals could exceed 12 inches (300 mm) in mountainous regions, significantly increasing the risk of landslides and swollen rivers.

Residents in flood-prone and coastal areas are urged to evacuate to higher ground, secure property, and follow guidance from local emergency management officials.

Jamaica and the Caribbean on High Alert

Authorities in Kingston, Montego Bay, and Port Antonio have activated emergency shelters and suspended flights ahead of Hurricane Melissa’s arrival.

Local governments in Cuba and the Bahamas are also preparing for potential evacuations as the storm moves north-northwest.

Long-Term Outlook

After impacting the Caribbean, Hurricane Melissa could maintain major hurricane strength as it moves into the Atlantic near the Bahamas later this week.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the storm’s path to assess any potential impacts to the southeastern United States.
