Man arrested in August homicide in Springfield, Massachusetts

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred in August.
Alex Alejandro, of Springfield, was taken into custody Friday at approximately 11:15 a.m. on the 0-100 block of Salem Street by members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit and United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
The arrest stems from an incident on Aug. 16 at approximately 4:15 a.m., when officers responded to the 3100 block of Main Street for a ShotSpotter activation.
An adult female gunshot victim arrived at Baystate shortly after, where she succumbed to her injuries. The Hampden District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as Reinalyz Caraballo, 19, of Springfield.
The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unit, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, investigated in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit. Detectives identified Alejandro as the shooting suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
During the investigation, detectives also identified Alejandro as a suspect in a shooting on Aug. 9 at approximately 12:30 a.m. on the 800 block of Carew Street.
