Mark Carney Says Canada Will Match Trump Tariffs Dollar for Dollar as Ottawa Talks Collapse

OTTAWA, Canada — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will match new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar after negotiations with the Trump administration failed to produce a trade agreement Friday night.
Carney announced that he had suspended trade negotiations with the United States and ordered Canada’s negotiating team to return to Ottawa after what he described as last-minute changes to the U.S. proposal.
50% U.S. Tariffs Set for Midnight
The United States intends to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods beginning at midnight, according to Carney.
Canada will respond with matching tariffs on U.S. goods.
Carney Suspends Trade Negotiations
Carney said negotiators had made progress in recent weeks but ultimately failed to reach terms that met Canada’s objectives.
He said the final U.S. proposals included changes that Canada could not accept, leading him to halt the negotiations.
Canada Plans Additional Support
The Canadian government also plans to announce additional measures in the coming days to support workers and businesses affected by the escalating trade dispute.
The move marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between Canada and the United States after several days of intensive negotiations aimed at preventing the new tariffs.
