More Than 40 Reportedly Trapped After Three Carriages Overturn in Lewes Train Derailment

More than 40 people were reportedly trapped after three passenger-train carriages overturned near Lewes in East Sussex on Thursday afternoon, leaving 11 people injured.

All Trapped Passengers Later Evacuated

The Southern Railway train was travelling from London Victoria to Eastbourne with approximately 150 passengers aboard when it derailed shortly before 4 p.m.

British Transport Police later confirmed that everyone had been evacuated from the train within approximately three hours.

Two People Seriously Injured

Two passengers sustained serious injuries, while nine others suffered less severe injuries.

Firefighters, paramedics and police responded alongside numerous ambulances and air ambulance helicopters.

Three Carriages Overturn Near Lewes

Three carriages came off the tracks and overturned, with one reportedly sliding down an embankment into a field.

Passengers described being thrown forward as the train rocked and suddenly braked. Some reportedly suffered cuts when carriage windows shattered.

Cause of Lewes Train Crash Under Investigation

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has deployed inspectors to determine what caused the derailment.

Rail services through Lewes remain severely disrupted, and passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling.
