Severe Thunderstorms and Flash Flooding Threaten Chicago Area This Evening

Thunderstorms are expected across the Chicago area this afternoon and evening, with some storms likely to become severe, according to the National Weather Service.

The primary period for severe weather is expected from approximately 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning.

The National Weather Service also warns of torrential rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding of roads, low-lying areas, fields and basements.

A tornado threat cannot be ruled out, particularly during the evening hours.

Storms are expected to move east-southeast at around 25 to 30 mph, with Chicago and surrounding portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana among the areas being monitored.
