UK issues thunderstorm warning for Northern Ireland, warns of possible power cuts
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — The UK Met Office has issued a Yellow Thunderstorm Warning for all of Northern Ireland on Tuesday, warning that power outages, flash flooding, and travel disruption are possible.
The warning will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and covers:
- County Antrim
- County Armagh
- County Down
- County Fermanagh
- County Londonderry
- County Tyrone
Forecasters expect slow-moving thunderstorms capable of producing 20–30 mm (0.8–1.2 inches) of rain in one to two hours, along with strong, gusty winds and hail.
The Met Office said short-term power cuts and interruptions to other services are likely, urging residents to prepare by having flashlights, spare batteries, portable phone chargers, and other essential supplies readily available.
Officials also warned of the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, and advised motorists to check road conditions before traveling. People outdoors are urged to seek shelter in a substantial building or vehicle if thunder is heard and to avoid standing under trees during thunderstorms.
