Heavy rain could trigger localized flash flooding across parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island

BOSTON, Mass. — The National Weather Service has issued a Day 2 Excessive Rainfall Outlook highlighting a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for localized flash flooding from Sunday night through Monday across portions of central and eastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island.

Forecasters warn that repeated rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall could produce urban and poor-drainage flooding, with the greatest flood threat centered on densely populated areas where storms repeatedly track over the same locations.

The primary hazards include:

• Localized flash flooding
• Heavy rainfall
• Flooding of urban streets and poor-drainage areas

The Weather Service estimates at least a 15% chance of flash flooding within the highlighted risk area and urges residents to remain alert for flood advisories and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
