Philadelphia added to severe storm risk Sunday; damaging winds and isolated tornadoes possible

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has expanded its Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather to include Philadelphia and much of the surrounding region, with strong to severe thunderstorms possible Sunday evening.

Forecasters warn that a few storms could become severe, producing damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and an isolated tornado, particularly across the western suburbs.

Storms are expected to develop by late afternoon, first affecting Berks and Chester counties in Pennsylvania and New Castle County, Delaware, before moving into the Philadelphia metropolitan area around sunset and continuing into the evening.

The region also remains under a Storm Alert for Monday, when multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms could bring strong winds, torrential rainfall, and localized flooding. Conditions are expected to stay mostly cloudy on Tuesday, with additional scattered storms possible Wednesday before hotter, more humid weather returns later in the week, with highs climbing into the low 90s.
