TAP Air Portugal flight TP217 declares emergency, diverts to Lajes Airport in the Azores

TERCEIRA, Azores — TAP Air Portugal Flight TP217, en route from Lisbon, Portugal, to Boston, Massachusetts, has declared an emergency (Squawk 7700) and diverted to Lajes Airport (TER) on Terceira Island in the Azores.

According to flight tracking data, the Airbus A321neo (registration CS-TXE) changed course over the Atlantic and began descending toward the diversion airport after transmitting the 7700 emergency squawk, the international code indicating a general emergency.

The reason for the emergency has not yet been disclosed. The aircraft is proceeding to Lajes Airport, and further information is expected once the flight lands safely or TAP Air Portugal issues an official statement.
