Strong thunderstorms expected across Northeast Florida this afternoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The National Weather Service says a few strong thunderstorms are expected across Northeast Florida this afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat focused in the highlighted area stretching from near Jacksonville south toward St. Augustine.

Forecasters say the main hazards include:

• Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph, with stronger gusts possible in the most intense storms.
• Heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding.
• Frequent lightning.

General thunderstorm activity is expected from now through 9:30 p.m., while the strongest storms are most likely between 3:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Residents are urged to seek shelter when thunder is heard, remain indoors during storms, and monitor local weather updates for any warnings that may be issued.
