Video: Earthquake Near Tokyo Reported at Magnitude 5.1

An earthquake struck near Tokyo, Japan, early Tuesday, September 29. Initial information supplied with the video puts its magnitude at 5.1, while the Japan Meteorological Agency lists 4.9.

JMA located the earthquake in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at 4:45 a.m. local time, at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers.

Shaking Felt Across the Tokyo Region

The strongest shaking reached intensity 4 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in parts of Ibaraki and Saitama.

Several Tokyo districts, including Shibuya, Chiyoda, Nakano and Nerima, recorded intensity 3. Shaking also reached Chiba, Kanagawa, Tochigi and Gunma.

No Tsunami Warning in Effect

JMA’s tsunami information service showed no active tsunami warnings or advisories following the earthquake.
