Gov. Abbott to hold briefing on Texas flood threat as heavy rain approaches

Gov. Greg Abbott will hold a briefing and press conference Monday afternoon as Texas prepares for increased heavy rainfall and flooding threats expected across large portions of the state over the next several days.

Official response and confirmed impact

Abbott will meet with state emergency management and public safety officials at the State Operations Center in Austin for a briefing beginning at 4:15 p.m.

The briefing itself will not be open for attribution or reporting, according to the governor's office.

The briefing comes as forecasters monitor the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding across parts of Texas this week.

Parts of the Texas Panhandle and northwest Texas are already under flood watches beginning Tuesday as multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected.

Abbott previously directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state emergency response resources ahead of flooding threats in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle.

In Central Texas, the National Weather Service says widespread rainfall capable of producing flash flooding is expected to increase during the middle to latter part of the week, particularly from Wednesday night through Friday morning.
