Cherry Capital Airport in talks for seasonal nonstop flights to L.A. or San Francisco

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (/WGTU) — Direct flights to California could be coming to the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

Negotiations are underway for seasonal direct flights to either Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Denver is the furthest west where people could travel from Traverse City currently.

A new West Coast flight may be possible through a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Small Communities Air Service Development.

Cherry Capital Airport CEO Kevin Klein said the airport will be negotiating with United Airlines to establish the routes.

"So, one of the things that we look at is where all our visitors are coming from and then where are all our locals are traveling to,” said Klein.

“And LAX and San Fransico both bring four to five in our top destinations.

So, they make a lot of sense to be able to do that. A lot of those passengers are connected to Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis and Dallas.
