Boston, Massachusetts: FAA Warns Severe Weather Could Shut Southbound Air Routes Across New England

BOSTON, Massachusetts — The FAA issued a new air traffic advisory Sunday warning that developing thunderstorms could cause multiple airway closures across Boston Center airspace, with the agency warning of a likely loss of all southbound routes by early afternoon.

Severe Storms Expected to Intensify

The advisory was issued at 11:00 a.m. EDT Sunday. Severe Weather Avoidance Plans are expected to begin around 2:00 p.m. EDT as thunderstorms developing across the Northeast intensify and move northeastward.

Flights Could Be Rerouted

The FAA said only limited routes may remain available to the west and along the coast if the expected airway closures develop.

Flights involving the Washington, D.C. area, Atlanta, Charlotte, Florida and other southern destinations may require alternate routes, while arrival routes into the Boston area could also be adjusted.

Passengers traveling through airports across the Northeast should monitor their airline’s flight status as weather-related routing changes develop through Sunday afternoon and evening.
