Severe Thunderstorms Could Hit New York City This Evening With Winds Near 60 MPH

New York City Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for scattered thunderstorms this evening, with Staten Island facing a slightly higher risk of severe weather and the rest of New York City under a marginal risk.

Storms could reach the city between approximately 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with strong winds the primary threat. Severe thunderstorms could produce wind gusts near 60 mph, while other storms may bring gusts of 40 to 50 mph.

Brief periods of heavy rainfall are also possible in isolated locations, although widespread flash flooding is not currently expected.

NYC Emergency Management is urging residents to secure loose outdoor objects, use caution while traveling and stay away from downed power lines. Drivers and pedestrians should also avoid flooded streets.

The severe weather threat is expected to decrease substantially after approximately 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday.
