Powerful 7.4 Earthquake Strikes Colombia; Flights Suspended to Multiple Cities

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Chocó, Colombia, at 7:34 a.m. local time Monday, according to an alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Colombia.

The embassy warned that aftershocks are likely and urged people to watch for falling debris and unstable structures.

Colombia’s aviation authority has also reported that flights to numerous cities are currently suspended following the earthquake. Travelers have been advised to contact their airlines directly for updated flight information and rebooking.

The U.S. Embassy said it is continuing to monitor the situation and advised U.S. citizens in Colombia to contact family and friends to let them know they are safe.

Authorities have not yet provided a complete assessment of casualties or damage, and further information is expected as affected areas are surveyed.
