Catania-Fontanarossa airport has been shut down again as a result of volcanic activity on Mount Etna, according to Euronews.

Sac, the company operating the airport, said the airspace had been closed because large amounts of ash were released into the atmosphere and wind conditions were unfavourable.

Arrivals and departures were formally suspended until 23:59 on Sunday 27 September.

The initial halt had been set for 12:00 before the stop was extended.

To reduce disruption, the company advised passengers not to travel to the terminal before checking the status of their flight with their airline.

The shutdown on Saturday had major consequences for the wider regional transport network.

The suspension of flights set off a knock-on effect at other Sicilian airports, including Comiso, Palermo and Trapani, which quickly became congested with aircraft diverted there in an emergency.

The way the situation was handled left thousands of travellers stranded and looking for alternatives, and it rapidly turned a logistical breakdown into an economic and industrial-relations dispute.
