Hermosa Beach Earthquake: Magnitude 3.6 Quake Shakes Los Angeles Area

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck offshore near Hermosa Beach, California, on Sunday morning, September 27, sending shaking through parts of the Los Angeles area.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at 8:40 a.m. Pacific time, approximately 3.7 miles west-southwest of Hermosa Beach. Its depth was about 7.4 miles.

Shaking felt across the South Bay

Residents in Torrance, Gardena and parts of west Los Angeles reported feeling the earthquake. More than 1,500 people submitted reports to the USGS describing the shaking.

Early reports listed the magnitude as 3.5, while the agency’s reviewed earthquake record shows 3.6.

No immediate reports of injuries or damage

No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

A Hermosa Beach Police Department dispatcher told City News Service that staff felt the earthquake, but the department had received no earthquake-related calls for service.
