 Shoot Knife-Wielding

FOX LAKE, IL — A 47-year-old Wauconda man is dead after he was fatally shot by officers in Fox Lake Sunday night, authorities said Monday.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene at a home in the 0 to 100 block of Howard Avenue in Fox Lake at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

Police say they were called to the home after receiving a report that the man damaged a vehicle and threw a golf club at a person at a nearby residence. That person called police and told authorities they wished to pursue charges, according to a news release.

Authorities responded and found the man at an acquaintance’s house in the 0 to 100 block of Howard Avenue. They told the man he was under arrest, and the man then pulled a knife out of his pocket and pointed it toward police officers, according to police.

The two Fox Lake Police Department officers told the man to drop the knife. But instead of dropping the knife, the man lunged toward one of the officers “with the knife drawn,” according to authorities.

Both officers shot “toward the man” who was struck by the gunfire, according to the news release. The man collapsed, and paramedics responded to provide aid. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene.

An acquaintance who lived at the home, a 43-year-old woman, was hit in the leg by one of the rounds fired by officers, according to the news release. Officers provided aid to her, and she was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

She is expected to be released from the hospital Monday, according to police.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting and turn its findings over to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will then determine if charges will be filed, authorities said.

An autopsy will be performed on the man who was fatally shot on Tuesday, according to authorities.
