RACINE, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating a shooting by a police officer in Racine, that happened Monday at approximately 12:30 a.m.

According to the DOJ, at about 10:10 p.m., Mount Pleasant police responded to a domestic violence incidence where shots were fired.

A short time later, Racine police conducted a traffic stop pulling over the suspect. The driver escaped and ran on foot hiding out in the tall grass near Clayton and Howland avenues by Clayton Park in Racine.

The man refused repeated commands to come out, and as police approached, he fired shots at officers, who exchanged gunfire and struck the suspect. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple neighbors in the area were outside during the incident, some sharing with 12 News’ Madison Moore that they heard over 30 gunshots.

“I’ve live in Racine my whole life I’ve never seen anything, experienced anything like this so it’s it’s a little traumatic you know, like I said, for the community, it’s it’s devastating, just devastating for our community. It’s very sad,” neighbor Matthew Montez said.

The officers who exchanged gunfire from Racine, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant have been placed on administrative assignment, per department policy.
