Germany Elections: Die Linke Leads in Berlin as AfD Tops Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, CDU Hits Historic Low

Germany’s state elections produced major political shifts on Sunday, with Die Linke leading in Berlin and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) finishing first in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to exit polls and early projections.

In Berlin, Die Linke was projected at around 24.5%, ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU at approximately 20%. The AfD was projected at about 16%, while the SPD fell to around 12%.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD was projected to take 37%, narrowly ahead of the governing SPD on 35.5%.

The CDU received about 5.5% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which would represent its lowest result in a German state election since the Federal Republic was founded in 1949.

The results do not automatically determine who will govern either state. Coalition negotiations will depend on the final official results, and other major parties have ruled out governing with the AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The figures remain based on exit polls and early projections, with final results still being counted.
