Person killed in shooting involving Charlotte, North Carolina-Mecklenburg police: What we know

A person was killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police in a shooting on Friday afternoon just north of Uptown Charlotte.

At around 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, police said they received a 911 call for a disturbance near the intersection of Lasalle Street and Newland Road in the Lincoln Heights area.

Chief Estella Patterson said when officers arrived they saw a large group of people unrelated to the initial 911 call nearby in what appeared to be a “criminal transaction.” It was not immediately clear what the “criminal transaction” was.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said one of the people saw officers and immediately started to walk away. Chief Patterson said multiple commands were given for the person to stop, but they ran away on foot.

Chief Patterson said officers chased after the person when he allegedly pulled out a gun. Police said they felt an imminent deadly threat and one officer shot the person. Medic took the person to a hospital where they died.

No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered, according to Chief Patterson.
