Peak Hurricane, Cyclone and Typhoon Season: US Issues Travel Safety Alert
The U.S. State Department is reminding Americans traveling abroad to prepare for severe weather as hurricane, cyclone and typhoon activity reaches its seasonal peak in many storm-prone regions.
Officials warned that relatively minor storms can intensify quickly, creating dangerous conditions for travelers with little notice.
Travelers are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security and emergency alerts, closely monitor local weather forecasts and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
The State Department also recommends keeping a basic emergency kit ready. Important items should include passports and other travel documents, necessary prescription medications, emergency supplies and some local currency.
Passports, documents, medications and other items that could be damaged by water should be stored in a sealed, watertight plastic bag.
Travelers heading to areas vulnerable to hurricanes, cyclones or typhoons should also review evacuation plans and remain prepared for sudden transportation disruptions, airport closures or changes to local services.
