Yoshua Bengio Warns Humanity Is “Losing Control” of AI, Calls for Nuclear-Style Guardrails
Artificial intelligence pioneer Yoshua Bengio has warned that humanity is “losing control” of AI, calling for global safeguards similar to those used to control nuclear weapons.
Bengio, a Canadian computer scientist and one of the leading figures behind modern artificial intelligence, said the rapid pace of development is creating risks that governments can no longer afford to ignore.
“There’s a reason these companies are saying this is going too fast, that we’re losing control,” Bengio told AFP.
Calls for stronger global AI controls
Bengio argued that increasingly powerful AI systems require international rules and oversight comparable to the safeguards created around nuclear technology.
His warning comes as major AI companies and researchers intensify debate over whether advanced systems are progressing faster than existing safety measures and regulations can handle.
Bengio shared the 2018 Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun for breakthroughs that helped drive the modern AI revolution.
He has since become one of the most prominent voices urging governments and technology companies to strengthen AI safety before more capable systems are deployed.
