PORTLAND, Maine — A prominent fiddler and instrument-maker in Maine, Cooper crafted more than 500 instruments The luthier Jonathan Cooper, a prominent instrument maker in Portland, Maine, has passed away, according to an announcement by The Violin Shop.

Cooper began his musical life as a guitarist, and throughout his high school years he bought, sold, and collected them.

Following his graduation, he became a professional guitarist and began playing the fiddle at age 20, at the suggestion of a friend.

Having taught himself to play by ear, Cooper soon established a reputation as a capable fiddler, and won competitions throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
