Breaking Update: Tropical Storm Warnings Issued for Kauai and Niihau as Hurricane Lowell Approaches Hawaii

Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for Kauai and Niihau as Category 3 Hurricane Lowell approaches the western Hawaiian Islands, bringing the threat of heavy rain, dangerous surf and strong wind gusts beginning Monday.

Lowell had maximum sustained winds of 125 mph early Sunday and was moving north-northwest as it continued its turn toward Hawaii.

Lowell Forecast to Pass West of Kauai and Niihau

The hurricane is forecast to track just west of the western Hawaiian Islands as it moves northward, with its closest approach expected Monday night.

Even if Lowell’s center remains offshore, its large circulation could bring tropical-storm-force winds and powerful squalls across Kauai and Niihau.

Heavy Rain and Dangerous Surf Threaten Hawaii

Tropical moisture associated with Lowell is expected to bring periods of heavy rainfall across the Hawaiian Islands, increasing the risk of flash flooding and mudslides.

Large swells generated by the hurricane are also producing dangerous surf and rip currents, with conditions expected to worsen as Lowell moves closer.

Residents and visitors on Kauai and Niihau are being urged to complete storm preparations and continue monitoring rapidly changing conditions through Tuesday.
