Hurricane Karina Strengthens, Major Hurricane Forecast This Week

Hurricane Karina has strengthened into a Category 1 storm over the eastern Pacific, with sustained winds reaching 80 mph.

Eye Begins to Form

Karina is beginning to clear out an eye while battling pockets of dry air that could temporarily slow its intensification.

Major Hurricane Expected

The National Hurricane Center forecasts Karina could become a major hurricane within a day or two. The storm remains far from land, but dangerous surf and rip currents may affect southwestern Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
