Tropical Storm Dolly Dissipates Into Open Tropical Wave as Heavy Rain Targets Leeward Islands

Tropical Storm Dolly has dissipated into an open tropical wave after hostile wind shear and dry air stripped away most of its thunderstorm activity over the Atlantic.

Dolly Loses Tropical Storm Status

The remnants were about 1,000 miles east of the Leeward Islands on Friday morning, moving west at 25 mph. Winds remained near 40 mph but are expected to fall below tropical-storm strength on Saturday.

Heavy Rain Still Expected

Dolly’s remnants should approach the Leeward Islands Saturday night into Sunday, bringing heavy rain and a possible flash-flood threat, especially across higher terrain.

Rainfall could spread into the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola from Sunday through Monday.

Could Dolly Become a Storm Again?

Some forecast models suggest Dolly could reorganize in several days, but regeneration appears unlikely for now because hostile conditions are expected to continue. The National Hurricane Center has ended its regular advisories on the system.
