Typhoon Saudel Rapidly Intensifies Near Northern Mariana Islands, Super Typhoon Possible

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — Typhoon Saudel is rapidly intensifying near the far northern Mariana Islands, strengthening into the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane as it moves through the western Pacific.

The storm is producing powerful winds and dangerous marine conditions across portions of the northern islands while continuing to strengthen.

Saudel Rapidly Intensifying

Satellite imagery shows intense thunderstorms developing around the typhoon’s center, although some dry air on the eastern side has limited the storm’s ability to completely surround its core with deep convection.

Despite the dry air, environmental conditions remain favorable for additional strengthening.

Super Typhoon Possible

Forecast guidance indicates Saudel could reach super typhoon intensity by Monday as it continues across the western Pacific.

The storm is then expected to encounter increasing wind shear, which could cause it to weaken later in its track.

Okinawa Could Face Impacts

Saudel is forecast to move toward the Okinawa region of Japan around the middle of the week.

The exact track and intensity remain subject to change, and residents across the region should continue monitoring official forecasts as the typhoon develops.
