CAPE NEWENHAM, Alaska — All eight people aboard a charter aircraft were killed when the plane crashed Thursday near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport in western Alaska.

The civilian-contracted aircraft was carrying two pilots and six passengers. It had departed from Anchorage and was approaching Cape Newenham when it went down early Thursday afternoon.

No survivors reported

The U.S. military confirmed that everyone aboard the aircraft was killed. The victims’ identities were not immediately released.

Search-and-recovery teams responded after the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center received a report of an aircraft incident near the remote radar installation.

Crash under investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident. The aircraft’s type and the cause of the crash were not immediately disclosed.

Cape Newenham is approximately 450 miles west of Anchorage. The radar installation is part of a network used to monitor aircraft operating across Alaska’s airspace and along U.S. borders.
