The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said two people were on board the plane, a Diamond DA20. A Bristol resident told Ronnie Parrillo of Maine's Total Coverage that carpenters who were working at nearby homes rushed into the water to try to help the people who were in the plane.
A photo shared with Maine's Total Coverage shows a small plane was upside down in the water. The person who shared the photo said the plane crashed in the ocean near Fort William Henry, which is located in the village of Pemaquid Beach.
The Maine's Total Coverage photographer who was at the scene captured video of the crash site that showed the plane was further submerged in the water, and that the wreckage was close to shore. The area of the water where the plane crashed is near where the Pemaquid River empties into Pemaquid Harbor.
Crews brought in a barge to remove the plane from the water. As the aircraft was being lifted out of the ocean at about 5:30 p.m., the right wing detached and fell back into the water.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the plane crash, according to the FAA. Location: Place, BRISTOL, Maine.
