Utility Pole Fire Knocks Out Power to 9,000 Customers in Schererville, Indiana

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. — A fire on an electrical pole near U.S. 41 and Main Street left approximately 9,000 NIPSCO customers without power Thursday afternoon, August 20, affecting several communities in northwest Indiana.

Firefighters, utility crews and town officials responded to the scene as downed electrical lines created safety concerns and major traffic disruptions.

Multiple communities affected

Power outages were reported in Schererville, Saint John and Highland following the incident.

Schererville Town Hall also lost electricity, making many municipal services temporarily unavailable.

Traffic lights go dark

The outage knocked out traffic signals along portions of U.S. 30 and U.S. 41, creating significant congestion.

Police asked motorists to avoid the area around U.S. 41 and Main Street while emergency crews assessed the damage and worked to secure the downed lines.

A restoration estimate was not immediately announced.
