Financial assistance available for Spokane, Washington-area wildfire victims

SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 700 families lost their homes in recent Spokane-area fires, and many others reported severe property damage. Financial assistance is available, but some application deadlines are approaching. The American Red Cross, Tzu Chi and the Washington Emergency Management Division are offering assistance.

Each program has different eligibility requirements, application methods and award amounts. Only about half of families whose homes were destroyed have applied for Red Cross assistance, according to the organization. The Red Cross application period ends Aug. 30. To qualify, a home must have been significantly damaged or destroyed and deemed unlivable.

Renters and homeowners may apply regardless of income.
