Hawaii Hurricane Warning Issued as Tropical Storm Lala Strengthens

A hurricane warning has been issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Lala strengthens and approaches the state. The storm is forecast to reach Category 1 hurricane strength by Saturday morning.

Lala Approaches Hawaii’s Big Island

Lala had maximum sustained winds near 50 mph Thursday afternoon. Its center is expected to pass near or just south of the Big Island, potentially bringing damaging winds even if it remains offshore.

Maui County Under Tropical Storm Watch

A tropical storm watch is in effect for Maui County, where tropical-storm-force winds could arrive Saturday as Lala moves west-northwest through the Hawaiian Islands.

Flash Flooding and Landslides Possible

Heavy rainfall could trigger dangerous flash flooding and landslides, particularly across mountainous and windward areas. Rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are possible, with higher amounts in isolated locations.

Residents should complete preparations before conditions deteriorate Friday night and Saturday. Power outages, fallen trees, flooded roads and dangerous surf are possible.
