Dangerous heat wave intensifies across Western U.S., extreme conditions through weekend

WASHINGTON — A dangerous heat wave continues across the Western United States, with extreme heat expected to intensify across the Southwest and Intermountain West through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

Forecasters say high temperatures will range from the upper 90s to locally 110°F, with many areas running 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Numerous daily temperature records are expected to be challenged or broken.

The prolonged daytime heat, combined with limited overnight cooling, will create widespread Major to locally Extreme HeatRisk, increasing the danger of heat-related illnesses, especially for people without access to air conditioning or adequate hydration.

Officials also warned that wildfire smoke will continue to reduce air quality across parts of the Pacific Northwest, Intermountain West, and Northern Rockies, posing additional health risks for sensitive groups.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable people, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
