Lower East Side bodega worker shot while trying to stop robbery; $5,000 reward offered

NEW YORK, N.Y. — A 25-year-old bodega worker was shot after trying to stop a man from stealing from a convenience store on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, according to the NYPD.

The shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. at Wholesome Organic Convenience. Police said the worker suffered a graze wound and was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The United Bodegas of America announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“This young man was shot in the back simply because he tried to stop a crime. Bodega workers should not have to risk their lives every time they report to work,” said the group’s spokesman, Fernando Mateo.

Police are searching for a suspect described as a man wearing a black shirt, black pants, and black-and-white shoes. The investigation remains ongoing.
