Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes Halmahera, Indonesia; no tsunami threat

HALMAHERA, Indonesia — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Halmahera, Indonesia, after Germany’s GFZ revised the quake’s magnitude from an initial 5.8.

The earthquake occurred at 12:50 a.m. local time on August 6, with its epicenter located at 1.8°N, 127.2°E, approximately 109 kilometers north of Ternate, at a depth of 115 kilometers.

Authorities said there is no tsunami threat, and Malaysia’s Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) confirmed that the earthquake poses no tsunami risk to Malaysia.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
