Arizona Issues First Tornado Watch Since 2010 as Severe Storm Threat Continues Near Phoenix

Severe storms threatened Arizona on Wednesday, October 21, with a severe thunderstorm watch covering parts of the state until 9 p.m. MST and a separate tornado watch issued for northern Arizona.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix warned of wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail measuring at least one inch, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall. Evening storms were most likely north and east of the Phoenix area.

The northern Arizona tornado watch, scheduled to last until 6 p.m. MST, was the state’s first since 2010, according to the National Weather Service, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.

A flood watch also covered the Phoenix metropolitan area and higher terrain through Thursday. Residents were urged to keep multiple ways of receiving warnings and shelter indoors, away from windows, during severe storms.
