$1.75M safety, utility upgrades for regional airport

Georgetown-Scott County Regional Airport received $1.75 million from the Kentucky General Assembly’s aviation budget Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Fire response and evacuations

The funding will directly support a water supply expansion project in eastern Scott County and provide the airport with fire hydrants for the first time since its establishment in 1993, according to staff.

The funding will allow the airport to install updated fire suppression systems for hangars and facilities and up to five fire hydrants on the property, a press release from Georgetown-Scott County Regional Airport reads.

Improvements are expected to be in place by spring 2027, as construction and installation will coincide with an ongoing widening project along Paris Pike and subsequent water line upgrades conducted by Kentucky American Water to the Bourbon County line.

The new water line and fire hydrants will give Scott County Fire Department “ready access” in the area, benefiting the airport and surrounding residents in eastern Scott County, Airport Board Chair Steve Woodrum said.

Existing water infrastructure does not support fire hydrant use on airport property or surrounding areas, creating a “long-standing infrastructure gap,” according to the release.
