Train derailment prompts evacuation in Springville

A train derailment Thursday afternoon in Springville prompted the evacuation of nearby residents and businesses and closed several roads as emergency crews responded to the scene.

The Springville Police Department said St. Clair County Communications issued an evacuation notice following the derailment, asking residents and businesses within 2,000 feet of Buckner Trailers, Industrial Drive and Walker Drive to leave the area.

Police initially reported roads closed from Industrial Drive to beyond Mountain View Road and urged motorists and others to stay away from the scene.

By 3:39 p.m., police reported Walker Drive and Industrial Road were the only two roads remaining closed in Springville.
