Video: Huge explosion rocks Mangalore Refinery in Mangaluru, sending black smoke into sky

Dramatic video shows a powerful explosion and thick black smoke rising from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) near Jokatte in Mangaluru, India, on Wednesday.

The blast occurred around midday in the refinery’s Coker Hydrotreater unit, and the explosion was reportedly heard and felt across surrounding areas, including Surathkal and near Mangaluru airport.

Workers were injured in the incident, with one contract worker reported to have suffered significant burns and requiring hospital treatment.

Emergency crews evacuated the affected area and battled the fire, which was subsequently brought under control.

Footage from the scene shows a large plume of dark smoke towering above the refinery complex following the explosion.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the blast, while officials have urged residents in nearby communities to remain calm as safety assessments continue.
